Summer came and went - school is here
Contributed by Ed Wiget

This past summer flew by for me. I took a temporary job that was supposed to last 2 weeks installing network cabling at the new Manchester Elementary School. We were working at times up to 12+ hour days 7 days a week.

I didn't get to do any of the things over the summer that I needed to do, or enjoyed doing. Things like camping, fishing, hiking, relaxing, etc. I also didn't get to fix my sisters back porch which has a severe mold issue on the interior walls due to leaking windows (an enclosed back porch). I ended up working up until the weekend before school started.

This will be a fun semester. I am taking 7 classes plus 3 labs for a total of 21 credit hours. I was actually looking forward to classes starting over again.

The only other thing that is important that I began over the summer was I started getting back into photography. You can check out some of the pictures I have taken at my flickr account - http://www.flickr.com/ewiget41056

Cisco 871 Router

I have had this cisco 871 router sitting here for a couple of years now. It works, just didn't need it at the time I aquired it (from an upgrade at a client location). Basically, the short end of the story on how I got it was this: Client purchased a Cisco 871 router with this configuration:

However, client needed a much more secure router with more capabilities than this router provided.

They already had several cisco switches and more robust routers....yet they needed something to provide a single cable internet connection for the rest of the network. They also required Intrusion Detection, remote management, and reliability on a budget. My solution.....a linux firewall/router.

So, I set this up to mostly brush up on some cisco CLI commands that I have likely forgotten over the last year or two. Look forward for more articles soon (as soon as I purchase the advanced ip ios set to get rid of some of these limitations.

Sabayon in.tftpd setup + cisco router config transfers
Contributed by Ed Wiget

I needed to backup some cisco router configuration information and decided to setup a tftp server to accomplish the task. I haven't set one up in a few years, so here is a brief howto on doing this.

First, make sure you have the tftp clients and server installed. You can use either emerge or equo for this job. I will show equo since it is the easiest.

 1.

# equo search tftp

You will notice from the above that the net-ftp/tftp-hpa is the server. Install it using this command:

 1.

# equo install net-ftp/tftp-hpa
