sabayon linux amd64 and javaws
Contributed by Ed Wiget

If you are using amd64, you will find that java web start applications simply don't work when using 64 bit java.  If you run the javaws command, you are presented with this message:

$ javaws
* javaws is not available for sun-jdk-1.6 on x86_64
* IMPORTANT: some Java tools are not available on some VMs on some architectures

This is not good if there is a web application you absolutely have to run (and as web 2.0 becomes more popular, this is an increasing need -- there is actually a post at the sun web site that 64 bit support for javaws in native java will be available in early 2009....but thats still a long way off).

Of course, you know I have a fix or I wouldn't be telling you about the problem.  If visiting from the front page, click on read more link.

Sabayon: Cleaning Up Equo/Entropy/Spritz Clutter
Contributed by Ed Wiget

I noticed my laptop was running out of disk space.  Granted, I had been using equo for my package management ever since it came out.  I figured it was probably related to it.

I cleaned up most of the normal crud that accumolates on the drive and was able to free up about 6GB of space.  However, I have my root partition at about 45GB.  I decided to cleanup equo temparay files.  Have a look below at the before and after running the command (the command is simply 'equo cleanup' run as root):

localhost ~ # df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs                 46G   39G  6.4G  86% /
/dev/sda5              46G   39G  6.4G  86% /
udev                   10M  180K  9.9M   2% /dev
/dev/shm              939M     0  939M   0% /dev/shm
rc-svcdir             1.0M  152K  872K  15% /lib/rc/init.d
cachedir               46G   39G  6.4G  86% /lib/splash/cache
/dev/sda1              62G   47G   15G  77% /mnt/Vista
/dev/sda2              92M   43M   47M  48% /boot

localhost ~ # equo cleanup
>>  * Cleaned: 3887 files and directories

localhost ~ # df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs                 46G   30G   16G  66% /
/dev/sda5              46G   30G   16G  66% /
udev                   10M  180K  9.9M   2% /dev
/dev/shm              939M     0  939M   0% /dev/shm
rc-svcdir             1.0M  152K  872K  15% /lib/rc/init.d
cachedir               46G   30G   16G  66% /lib/splash/cache
/dev/sda1              62G   47G   15G  77% /mnt/Vista
/dev/sda2              92M   43M   47M  48% /boot

There was over 10GB of files related to equo that was cleaned up!

Canon 50D

I bought a Canon 50D, the latest and greatest in the **D series.  I actually bought it several days ago on October 6, 2008 along with the EF 28-135 F/3.4-5.6 IS USM lens, battery grip, spare battery, and a new manfrotto tripod and head.

I haven't had a lot of chances to take pictures with it yet due to my father passing away on October 12 (also my birthday).

However, I did add the flickr app to the right side of this web site so you can see my latest uploads.  I am sure there will be pictures there before long.
